IDFB’s Ongoing Commitment to Sustainable Practices

IDFB is dedicated to championing the sustainability story of down and feather. The organization’s recent efforts highlight its ongoing commitment — from engaging at industry conferences and amplifying the conversation through social media, to participation with the International Down Market Committee (IDMC). Each initiative reflects IDFB’s mission in supporting and promoting the sustainability of down and feather material.

Here’s a closer look at what IDFB has been working on — and why it matters.

Expanding the LCA
As an ongoing effort to study sustainability, IDFB is glad to once again commission Long Trail Sustainability, an independent third-party organization that specializes in Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), to now conduct a deep dive comparison between recycled down and virgin down. This new study will build upon the data available from the first LCA that tested the environmental footprint in five areas: human health, ecosystems, resources, cumulative energy demand, and climate change. By investing in this LCA, IDFB isn’t just reinforcing the sustainability story of down and feather, it is empowering manufacturers, retailers, and consumers to make informed choices in favor of materials that truly support a healthier planet.

Attendace at ISPO 2024
IDFB had the opportunity to attend ISPO Munich from December 3-5, 2024, where the organization held a booth in the sustainability section of the show floor. Over the course of three days, IDFB engaged with attendees from around the world and successfully distributed valuable information about the superior sustainability of down. The goal of industry event attendance is to share and motivate attendees to learn more about responsible sourcing and of the environmental advantages of down and feather fill.

Engagement with Other Groups
Through its cooperation with the IDMC, IDFB is focused on improving the integrity of labeling on a global scale by fighting against trademark infringement and improperly labeled products. This work not only protects consumers and upholds industry standards, but it also supports the sustainability of down and feather by ensuring clear and accurate labeling. Proper labels ensure that responsibly sourced materials are recognized and valued, while reinforcing transparency and trust throughout the supply chain.

As the landscape continues to evolve, IDFB will remain focused on advancing and continuing initiatives that drive both sustainability and industry integrity. Subscribe to our IDFB blogs to stay up to date with the latest blogs.

When it comes to camping, having the right gear can make or break your experience. One important decision is choosing the right fill material for sleeping bags, jackets, and other essential items. Natural down fill remains the gold standard for campers who want to blend comfort, performance, and eco-consciousness.

LCA

A global lifecycle assessment concluded that down fill material has an astounding 85% - 97% lower environmental impact than polyester fill material in all five areas tested. In human health, ecosystems, resources, energy demand, and climate change.
